- Mayor Beng Climaco is set to attend the Senate hearing on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) in Manila Wednesday, June 3, where she will reiterate the city’s firm opposition to the prospect of including Zamboanga in the proposed Bangsamoro core territory. Mayor Climaco along with other local government executives in Mindanao have been invited by the Senate to attend the hearing on the BBL as the latter prepares to discuss and eventually act on the proposed Bangsamoro law.
- Members of the Early Recovery Coordination (ERC) met Tuesday, June 2, to thresh out issues and concerns regarding the early recovery measures being undertaken by the local government and its partners. The meeting discussed the current and most pressing needs encountered by the different recovery sectors working on the ground relative the preparation of IDP movements and transfers, and the preparation of transitory sites and permanent shelters, including the institution of minimum standards of living for shelter areas. Mayor Climaco, who presided the meeting, acknowledged efforts made the United Nations – Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), represented by its outgoing Country Representative David Carden, to support and assist the City in coordinating the appropriate response for IDPs since the early emergency phase up to the current early recovery phase.
- To better understand the city’s preparedness in responding to disasters, the local government through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office will hold a series of emergency drills starting next week. The move is in response to the directive from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) calling for local government units to hold drills in preparation for natural and man-made disasters. To better gauge the effectiveness of the city government’s disaster response as well as identify lapses during the drill, it was decided not to disclose the exact date and time emergency drills will be held. The first of the series of drills will be conducted simultaneously at all local government offices at an undisclosed date next week and will be signaled by the sounding of city hall’s siren during office hours.
- Of all problems affecting the public elementary and secondary schools in Zamboanga City, the shortage of seating facilities is so far the greatest of them all with 70,418 chairs are badly needed this school year. City Schools Division office records show that public elementary and secondary schools in the city are in need of 71,718 seating facilities, of which only 1,300 were supplied, thus the need of 70,418 more chairs.
- The Local School Board chaired by Mayor Beng Climaco was able to realize P14.7 million savings from the Special Education Fund last year. The Board has approved a resolution upon the mayor’s request to allocate the savings for the purchase of chairs and other furniture for all public elementary and secondary schools in the city.
- Information Caravan on the Code of Policies for Z3R Beneficiary Selection and its Implementing Rules and Regulations will kick off Wednesday, June 3 at 9am (for Masepla 1 TS) and 2 pm (for Masepla 2 and 3) in Masepla, Mampang. Organized by the Communications Working Group, the other schedule is as follows:
