Zamboanga City News Bits – May 18, 2015

  • Zamboangueños representing different sectors paid tribute to Gen. Vicente Alvarez with fitting ceremonies Monday, marking the day when Spanish forces surrendered at Fort Pilar, making Zamboanga the last bastion of Spanish rule. Mayor Beng Climaco who led the series of activities, extolled Gen. Alvarez for standing pat in defense of the city in 1899, as she called on residents to stand united and courageous to bring about positive change in these trying times. The activity kicked off with a wreathlaying rite, a commemorative program and exhibit of entries to the photo essay competition. A mass was held at Fort Pilar Shrine Monday afternoon.
  • The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has earmarked a total of P12.7 million for Zamboanga in line with its program on poverty alleviation. The projects include the proposed construction of Community Fish Landing Centers in Labuan, Arena Blanco, Mangusu and Tictapul at P3 million each and 200 units of pumpboat engines (5 horse power) at P3,920 each. The certificates of award for the landing site projects and the engines for the IDPs and indigents were turned over to Mayor Beng Climaco Monday.
  • The City Government will be proceeding with the rehabilitation of the Joaquin Enriquez Sports Complex following its clearing and closure slated sometime this month. The total rehabilitation cost for the complex is P335 million but the available funding based on the post conflict and needs assessment is only P214 million. The city make representations with the Office of the President for the additional funding. Mayor Climaco said the Grandstand rehabilitation will come at the heels of the complex’s impending closure as an evacuation center once its occupants – roughly 678 IDP families – have transferred to other shelter sites. With the exception of some families who will remain at the Don Navarro area, the local government expects to have the Grandstand area cleared and closed by the end of the month.
  • An exhibit of Marian images was formally opened in City Hall Monday as part of the Festival de las Bellas y Flores. The exhibit features ten of the best Marian images from the different barangays in Zamboanga. The exhibit also forms part of the promotion and preservation of culture and arts activities.
