THE PHILIPPINES’ OLDEST English newspaper, The Manila Times, has recognized Zamboanga as one of the country’s top model cities and awarded the local government the “Green Thumb Award” during a recent ceremony held at the New World Manila Bay Hotel.
The Manila Times launched the annual “Top Model Cities Award” which recognizes outstanding urban centers across the Philippines. It cited Zamboanga City’s leadership under Mayor Beng Climaco who prioritizes the well-being of the environment.
“The city (of Zamboanga) is also paving the way for the conversion of the 4.6 hectare former dumpsite into an eco-park that will cater waste recycling facilities with the goal of reducing plastic waste and prolonging the life of the sanitary landfill along with the various clean-up drives and activities,” according to The Manila Times.

Zamboanga City Vice Mayor Rommel Agan, who received the prestigious award together with City Administrator Apple Go on Climaco’s behalf, said: “Zamboanga City bagged the award on the basis of having a leadership that prioritizes the well-being of the environment that the City Government even proclaimed its own Cleanest and Greenest Barangay competition in line with City Ordinance 2016-176 that establishes the Integrated Solid Waste Management System.”
Agan and Go led the Zamboanga delegation and received the Green Thumb Award from The Manila Times President and CEO, Dante Francis Ang and COO Blanca Mercado; and Dezza Paras, marketing manager of Wilcon Depot. The Manila Times was founded on October 11, 1898 and one of the most well-respected and influential newspapers in the Philippines. (Zamboanga Post)
