ZAMBOANGA CITY – Zamboanga City is set to launch again – the second since last year – the so-called Bahay Kubo farming concept in villages in an effort to revive and promote backyard vegetable gardening.
City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat said the garden will make available nutritious vegetables for the family and reduce malnutrition incidence. He said they will tap the villages with high incidence of malnutrition
Initiated last year, Palacat said the Bahay Kubo concept, which aptly models a typical Filipino nipa hut with all the green and yellow leafy vegetables in the backyard, kicked off with one model or pilot area in each of the 6 agricultural areas – Vitali, Curuan, Manicahan, Culianan, Tumaga and Ayala.
Palacat said the City Agriculturist Office will provide the germinated seedlings and extend technical assistance – from the planting to harvest and even up to the marketing.
He said not only the program would provide a sustainable food supply, it will also reduce malnutrition incidence, increase income of the family and ensure available source of vegetables. (Mindanao Examiner. With a report from Sheila Covarrubias)
