ZAMBOANGA CITY – Local Mayor Maria Isabelle Salazar has reiterated her call for community involvement in crime prevention efforts, saying the participation of citizens is crucial in maintaining peace and order in this southern Philippine city.

Speaking to participants in the recently concluded Symposium on Crime Prevention and Public Safety, Salazar also urged the public to cooperate with authorities and support the government’s efforts in fighting crimes.

The symposium was a collaborative effort of the local government, the United States Agency for International Development – Enhancing Governance, Accountability and Engagement, the Ateneo Center for Leadership and Governance, Western Mindanao State University’s College of Social Work and Community Development, Peace and Human Security Institute, Crime Watch Volunteers of Zamboanga and the Mindanao Development Authority.

It was attended by representatives from different villages, schools and civil society organizations, discussed various topics that included the local crime situation, kidnapping and terrorism, improvised explosives, and role of community leaders and citizens as well, among others.
