ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Apr. 2, 2012) – The Philippine National Police sacked its commander in Zamboanga following the broad daylight killing of a university president in the southern port city.
Senior Superintendent Edwin de Ocampo was relieved from his post on Monday after the weekend murder of Dr. Arturo Eustaquio near his home in the village of Santa Maria. Two gunmen shot Eustaquio, who was on motorcycle, at around 1 p.m.
Chief Superintendent Mario Yanga, who served as Zamboanga’s police chief in the past, has been named acting commander and also head of a task force that is investigating Eustaquio’s murder.
Yanga also announced a P100,000 bounty for anybody who could help or lead authorities to the identities of Eustaquio’s killers or the mastermind to the murder.
De Ocampo served as police chief the past two years and stayed on his post despite mounting calls from various sectors to solve or put a stop to the unabated killings and gun attacks blamed on hired killers who are actively operating in Zamboanga City.
The latest killings drew strong condemnation from various civil groups and organizations. Besides the spate of gun attacks, kidnappings and terrorism remain a serious threat to the local peace and order. (Mindanao Examiner)
