ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 24, 2014) – An unidentified gunman on Friday fatally shot a 19-year old student in a daring attack outside the Western Mindanao State University in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.
The victim, Carlo Angelo Canda, was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the head. His condition is still unknown. The gunman fled after the attack and it was not immediately known whether witnesses could identify the assailant.
No individual claimed responsibility for the attack and police said it is investigating the shooting of the engineering student.
Gun attacks and killings are not uncommon in Zamboanga City where hired killers are actively operating.
Just last year, an alumnus of the Ateneo De Zamboanga University, Justine Raphael Wee, was killed. The murder sparked a wide protest and Ateneo students called for a stop to the unabated killings and gun attacks in Zamboanga.
Wee, scion of a wealthy Chinese family, was shot June 22 in the head by a lone gunman wearing a motorcycle helmet at a roadside eatery along Veterans Avenue.
Most of the murder cases in Zamboanga remain unresolved and police and local government officials were quick to blame the killings to either family feud or grudge. (Mindanao Examiner)
