DIPOLOG CITY (Mindanao Examiner / July 6, 2013) – Security forces killed Saturday a notorious bandit leader after he tried to toss a grenade on police commandos and army soldiers sent to arrest him in Zamboanga del Norte province in southern Philippines, officials said.

Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, a regional police spokesman, said Yacob Iyong, also one of the most wanted criminals in western Mindanao, was killed in his hideout in Sirawai town where security forces tracked him down.

He said the body was brought to the town of Tungawan in Zamboanga Sibugay province and handed over to his family.

“While serving the arrest warrants, Yacob resisted arrest and attempted to throw a hand grenade to the arresting officers which prompted the operating troops to shoot the subject that led to his instantaneous death. Yacob had multiple murder cases,” Huesca said.

The warrants were issued by Judge Reubin Lo. Maraon, of the Regional Trial Court Branch 24 in Zamboanga Sibugay. No other details about the slain bandit leader was released by the police or military. (Mindanao Examiner)
