Military confirms attack on soldiers in Southern Philippines

Desk Editor May 26, 2016

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The military’s Western Mindanao Command has confirmed the killing of a soldier and wounding of another in an attack Thursday in the southern Sulu province.

It said the soldiers were on a tricycle when two gunmen attacked them, sparking a firefight in the village of Busbus in Jolo town.

The military said another soldier, who was with the duo, managed to seek reinforcement and rescued the wounded infantryman and recovered the body of the slain army member.

The gunmen escaped on a motorcycle. It was not immediately known why the police failed to prevent the attack. Other reports said the attack occurred in Patikul town while the soldiers were heading to their camp.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Abu Sayyaf is actively operating in Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the restive Muslim autonomous region. (Mindanao Examiner)
