CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – New People’s Army rebels killed 2 government soldiers in an ambush on Saturday in southern Philippines where security forces are battling communist and Muslim insurgents, officials said.
Officials said Privates First Class Rene Lazaga and Nick Alron Millan were on a motorcycle when rebels attacked them in the village of San Patricio in Agusan del Sur’s La Paz town.
The soldiers, both unarmed, were heading back to their camp from community works when rebels ambushed them.
Lt. Col. Rolando Dumawa, commander of the 26th Infantry Battalion, condemned the killing of the soldiers, saying, the duo was actively involved in various humanitarian programs in the town.
The Eastern Mindanao Command said the rebels also stripped the soldiers of their personal belongings, including their money.
“We are saddened by the death of our soldiers conducting community works. This is not just a loss on the part of the military but also to the community which they were serving. This incident only proves that NPAs are plain criminals, who are anti-people and anti-development. Our soldiers are facilitating development in the area when they were killed and robbed,” said Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad, the division commander.
The NPA has been fighting for a separate state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
