CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Three soldiers were killed and 6 others wounded, including a policeman, in separate communist rebel attacks in southern Philippines, officials said Saturday.
Officials said New People’s Army rebels ambushed a military convoy in Agusan del Sur’s Prosperidad town late on Friday, sparking a 30-minute firefight in the village of Los Arcos.
Troops also recovered an improvised explosive planted by rebels. The soldiers were on five trucks and heading to a village where rebel forces had been spotted when a roadside exploded and hitting the convoy.
The rebels escaped even before military reinforcement could arrive. General Aurelio Baladad, chief of the Eastern Mindanao Command, quickly condemned the attack.
“While it is sad that we incurred casualties due to the landmine explosion, our troops fought gallantly and repulsed the ambush thereby preventing the NPAs from overrunning the convoy and inflicting more casualties,” Baladad said.
In Surigao del Norte’s Cortes town, rebels also ambushed a police patrol that wounded one officer in Tigao village. The policemen were responding to a vehicular accident on a nearby village when NPA gunmen attacked them.
There was no immediate stamen from the NPA, which has been fighting for many decades now for the establishment of a Maoist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
