PAGADIAN CITY – Police held a 27-year old truck driver after he fled from a road accident that left 5 people injured on a highway in Zamboanga Sibugay province in southern Philippines, officials said Wednesday.

Officials said Mahathir Malawani, a native of Marawi City in Lanao del Sur province, was intercepted by policemen in Buug town after fled from the town of Diplahan on the night of January 27.

Malawani hit a motorcycle and injured its driver Roger Baluarte, 44; and passengers Avelinda Macalos, 53; Candelario Duhaylungsod, 44; and Marchboy Sandalan, 16.

A 57-year old man, Ignacio Visaya, who was on a bicycle, was also hurt when he jumped in a canal to avoid the truck.

Officials said Malawani was heading to Marawi City from Zamboanga City when the accident occurred. (Mindanao Examiner)
