DAVAO CITY – A moderately strong earthquake shook a huge part of the southern Philippines on Saturday, but officials said there were no reports of casualties or damage, but the tremor brought fear to many people who fear a tsunami would follow after several aftershocks had been recorded.
The epicenter of the earthquake was traced 42 kilometers under the just 41 kilometers off Mati City in Davao Oriental province. Many provinces and cities, including Davao in eastern Mindanao and as far Cagayan de Oro in the northern region were also jolted by the earthquake.
There were no tsunami warnings and the military said no casualties had been reported in areas where the 6.5 magnitude tremor was felt.
The Eastern Mindanao Command was quick to alert its troops in case an emergency arises due to the earthquake. It also conducted a rapid damage assessment with the Davao Oriental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council and declared that structural damage was reported in Mati City and other areas.
“So far there were no reported casualties or damages during the incident,” it said. In April this year, a magnitude 6 earthquake in Zamboanga del Norte province injured at least 3 people in Zamboanga City’s Sinunuc village after the walls of their house collapsed.
The tremor was traced near Baliguian town and tectonic in origin or a sudden movement of the earth’s crust caused by the release of stress accumulated along geologic faults.
The Philippines sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer area where large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. It has more than 400 volcanoes and sometimes called the circum-Pacific seismic belt. (Mindanao Examiner)
