CEBU – The food subsidiary of the Aboitiz Group, Pilmico, donated 130 egg machines and piglets to more than 100 typhoon victims in the Visayas in central Philippines to help them earn and rebuild their lives after super storm Yolanda (Haiyan) ravaged the region in November 2013.
Norie Bermudez, Pilmico’s Assistant Vice President for Feed Sales, said the recipients of the machines, each worth some P40,000, can help provide livelihood for all the beneficiaries of the donation. He said each machine comes complete with kit of pens and 48 six-month old ready-to-lay hens with rearing cages and built-in feeding trough and waterer.
“Since the hens are ready to lay with eggs, recipients can earn every day by selling the eggs,” he said, adding, each recipient was given two sets of egg machines, excluding the two-week free supply of feeds.
“Eggs produced are organic as hens were not given chemical feeds while the hens are also fully vaccinated against diseases,” Bermudez said.
He said the hens can lay eggs up to 16 months after which, the hens need to be replaced which will now be the responsibility of the recipients, who are also given technical assistance if they encounter problems.
Of the 130 egg machine beneficiaries, 15 were from northern Cebu while another 15 from Ormoc and 100 came from Tacloban City, Palo and Tanauan, three of the hardest-hit areas of Yolanda.
According to John Paul Pangilinan, Marketing Manager of Pilmico, the Aboitiz Group has launched the advocacy program dubbed “Bangon Visayas” after the typhoon and this eventually became the springboard to kick off the “Mahalin Pagkaing Atin” campaign – a quick impact project with a fast return on investment of which the donation of the egg machine is part of the project.
In December, Pilmico also distributed relief goods to some 900 victims of typhoon Seniang in the town of Ronda in southern Cebu. (MBCN, FCR)
