COTABATO CITY – Gunmen ambushed a group of policemen and killing one of them in the town of Picong in Lanao del Sur, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.
Four others were also wounded in the Tuesday attack, including the town’s police chief, Senior Inspector Rudy Basingit. Police said PO1 Tahir Mala perished in the ambush. The policemen were on travelling on a vehicle in Maganding village when the ambushers opened fire and later escaped.
The motive of the attack was unknown and authorities have begun investigating the ambush to determine whether it was connected to the government’s campaign against illegal drugs or an offshoot of clan war.
Police also launched an operation to track down the attackers. There was no immediate statement from the regional police headquarters or from the provincial governor, Mamintal Adiong Jr. (Mindanao Examiner)
