Philippine Navy photos show rescued passengers of ill-fated MV Cruiser Sam and Short in Cebu province.

CEBU – Dozens of people were rescued by the navy from a passenger boat that capsized off Cebu province in central Philippines, officials said Sunday.

Officials said the ill-fated boat MV Cruiser Sam and Shorty was heading to Bohol province when it capsized September 19 near Talisay City in Cebu. Three navy vessels – VU 471, BRP Subanon and AT 291 – were sent to the area to help in the search and rescue operations.

Members of the Naval Special Operations Unit rescued a total of 53 passengers -32 adult males, 14 adult females and seven children – over the weekend.

Officials said the Naval Forces Central Command dispatched a medical team to attend to the rescued passengers.

Those rescued said huge waves and strong winds battered the boat and triggered panic among the passengers until it capsized.

Officials said all passengers had been accounted for. (Cebu Examiner)
