KIDAPAWAN CITY – Police launched a murder investigation into the killing of a tribesman who was a member of the municipal council in Magpet town in North Cotabato province in southern Philippines.
Police said Antonio Takinan, 50, was fatally shot outside a school in Tagbac village late Wednesday afternoon. Two of his companions, Rene Soriano, 50; and Robello Tambunan, 62, were also attacked and wounded.
At least 6 gunmen were involved in the shooting, police said and there were intelligence reports that communist rebels could be behind the daring attack. Policemen who responded to the shooting have recovered over two dozen bullet shells from .45-caliber and 9mm pistols.
Takinan was shot at least 5 times and died on the spot. Both Soriano and Tambunan were rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Their condition remains unknown, but policemen have been guarding the duo in the hospital in Kidapawan City.
The motive of the attack is still unknown and no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the shooting. (Rhoderick Beñez)
