Davao City scraps localized peace talks with rebels

Chief Editor December 8, 2017

DAVAO CITY – Presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sarah Duterte-Carpio has ceased the localized peace talks with communist rebels and instead created a group which will address problems in the grassroots and engage communities in peace and development efforts.

Carpio scrapped the talks with New People’s Army rebels after President Rodrigo Duterte trashed negotiations with rebels and tagged them as terrorists, alongside the Communist Party of the Philippines due to continued attacks on government and civilian targets across the country.

She also renamed the Davao City Peace Committee, in-charged of dealing with rebels – to Davao City Advisory Committee for Peace and Development (DC-PEACE Dev) that will now deal with various problems in the communities. “Since the policy of the government is to never negotiate with terrorists, what we are going to do is to talk to the community about their issues through the DC-PEACE Dev,” Carpio said.

“The new body will serve as the medium between the city government and far-flung communities to resolve their issues and concerns. The output of the talk will be used by the City Government of Davao to address the issues the communities are experiencing. We acknowledge that they have issues with regard to the services of the government,” she added.

Carpio said she now leaves the insurgency problems up to the military. Rebel forces are actively operating in several remote villages in Davao and had previously launched daring and deadly attacks on soldiers there.

The NPA has been fighting for many decades now trying to overthrow the democratic government and put up its own Maoist rule in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
