
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 10, 2014) – The Department of Health reported over 3,000 cases of dengue fever in the southern Philippine region of Caraga.
It said more than a dozen people had already died from the deadly disease whose virus is transmitted to human through the bites of a particular mosquito – Aedes aegypti – which causes hemorrhagic fever.
According to the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, the number of dengue cases is still rising since early this month in the region.
Agusan del Sur has the biggest number of cases with 752 and followed by Butuan with 732 dengue cases.
The virus is characterized by high fever, rash, headache and severe muscle and joint pains. Officials appeal to citizens to help fight dengue by cleaning their surroundings to get rid of breeding places of mosquitoes such as stagnant water, canals, flower pots and discarded tires.
