MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / Apr. 21, 2014) – A Filipino town mayor was assassinated in a daring attack Monday by communist rebels during a flag ceremony in the northern province of Cagayan, officials said.

Officials said the New People’s Army was behind the murder of Mayor Carlito Pentecostes, of Gonzaga town. The politician was about to address civil employees when two gunmen in camouflaged uniform attacked him.

The two hit men were believed part of a larger group of rebels that penetrated the town. The rebels also disarmed several policemen near the town hall before the politician was shot. The attack was believed connected to illegal mining operations in the town.

There was no immediate statement from the NPA about the killing, but it has previously warned mining companies and those who protect them to stop their operations which the rebel group said is destroying the environment and affected the people and their communities. (Mindanao Examiner)
