MAYOR BENG CLIMACO has ordered the Zamboanga City Engineer’s Office (CEO) to further strengthen the inspections of all public and private edifices here and to strictly impose the provisions of the building code after a series of tremors destroyed structures in the provinces of North Cotabato and Davao del Sur.
City Engineer Christopher Navarro said the conduct of structural audit on edifices is a regular activity that is being strictly implemented. He said they have sent letters to owners of edifices recommending repairs, revisions or retrofitting of buildings that were found to have minor cracks during inspections, although these were superficial and did not show serious problems in terms of structural integrity.

Building owners were also advised to clear passageways to emergency exits as well as to submit evacuation plans to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office for evaluation.
Navarro said during inspections, not only are the buildings’ integrity is being checked, but compliance to provisions of the National Building Code as emphasized by Climaco.
The National Building Code (Presidential Decree No. 1096) is a government policy covering technical requirements in constructing or renovating buildings and structures to secure the life, health, property and welfare of the Filipinos. (Zamboanga Post)
