‘Inday Sara for Senator Movement’ launched in Cebu

Chief Editor August 3, 2018

CEBU CITY – A movement calling for presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to run for senator in the 2019 mid-term elections was launched in Cebu City.

Cebu City Councilor Erik Manuel Espina, who initiated the “Inday Sara Duterte for Senator Movement”, spearheaded the launching in his office at Cebu City Hall. “We, the volunteer officers, coordinators, members of the Inday Sara Duterte for Senator Movement is launching a national campaign in this historic island of Cebu in order to persuade Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte to be a candidate for senator of the republic in next year’s election,” Espina said.

He said the movement aims to gather at least one million signatures from all over the country to convince Carpio to run for the Senate. The movement, he added, is open to anyone interested to join the campaign, regardless of political affiliation. “Anybody can join. Let’s start here in Cebu,” said Espina, who described Carpio as an “instrument of peace”.

Informed about the movement, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he is inclined to support the signature campaign. “She’s (Sara) from local government. That’s a big plus. And she’s Bisaya. That’s enough for me. Yes, I will support it,” Osmeña said.

Carpio is also said to have a hand in the ouster of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, who was replaced by Pampanga Representative Gloria Arroyo, after lawmakers sought her support following widespread dissatisfaction over many issues against the Davao solon. (Luel Galarpe)
