DAVAO CITY – Three tribal leaders in southern Philippines are still being held captive by communist rebels despite the release of the fourth hostage, the military said Tuesday.
It said troops were searching for the leaders Jovanie Angcomog, Danilo Angcomog and Laris Landakay who were seized while travelling to the town of Talaingod in Davao del Norte province just this month.
Their companion, Datu Kulumput Dalon, 70, was reportedly freed by the New People’s Army, but details surrounding his freedom remain unclear, although the military was insisting that the tribal leaders are being held by rebels to prevent the from testifying against the insurgents.
The victims, all members of the Manobo tribe in Bukidnon province, were supposed to join peaceful talks between warring tribes in Davao del Norte.
It was unknown why the rebels captured the elders. The NPA has long been fighting the government for the establishment of their own state. (Mindanao Examiner)
