MANILA – It has been two days since a newspaper columnist was shot dead in Ilocos Norte province in northern Philippines, but police have failed to arrest the cold-blooded killer of Steve Barreiro.
The 52-year veteran writer was shot in front of his daughter on September 6 at a market in Pasuquin town. Police said Barreiro’s daughter has identified his father’s killer as the estranged husband of the writer’s girlfriend.
Barreiro was buying at a store when the gunman shot him. The killer escaped after shooting Barreiro. The writer’s daughter was unhurt from the attack.
Police said jealousy was likely motive for the killing of Barreiro, a widower, who survived a grenade attack in his home in 2009 in Laoag City. Barreiro was known as a hard-hitting columnist for a local tabloid. (Mindanao Examiner)
