GENERAL SANTOS CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 2, 2013) – An unidentified gunman shot dead a freelance news photographer in an attack in the southern Philippine city of General Santos, police said Friday.
Police are investigating the killing of Mario Sy who was shot inside his home late Friday.
The motive of the murder is still unknown, but Sy contributes to Mindanao Bulletin and Sapol Bulletin newspapers in the region.
Police said Sy’s family witnessed the killing, but it was not immediately known whether the victim’s wife has provided any information or spoke to investigators about the murder.
Sy’s killing is the 18th since President Benigno Aquino was elected into office. Aquino has repeatedly vowed to bring justice to the families of journalists murdered in the country.
Just recently, two tabloid columnists Bonifacio Loreto and Richard Kho – who wrote for Aksyon Ngayon – were fatally shot by motorcycle gunmen in Commonwealth village in Quezon City in Luzon. (Mindanao Examiner)
