DAVAO CITY – The Philippine military has launched an operation against the communist rebel group following a bomb attack that injured four soldiers in the restive southern region of Mindanao.
Captain Alberto Caber, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, said the soldiers were patrolling the village of Binucayan in Agusan del Sur’s Loreto town when the explosion occured.
The attack, he said, sparked a firefight between the two groups. He also quoted civilians as saying that many rebels were either injured or killed in the clash, but this could not be independently confirmed. He further said that troops recovered several improvised explosives left behind by fleeing rebels.
He said members of the 26th Infantry Battalion were pursuing the rebels, who are fighting for a separate state in the country.
There was no immediate statement from the NPA about the latest fighting. (Mindanao Examiner)
