Peaceful New Year celebration in Zamboanga

Desk Editor January 1, 2016

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Local mayor Beng Climaco on Friday praised authorities for the peaceful celebration of the New Year.

Climaco also said that there were zero incidents of any firecrackers-related injuries and not even victims of stray bullets. “We thank the people of Zamboanga City for your cooperation. There is zero firecrackers and stray bullet injury during the celebration of New Year,” she said.

The mayor said police authorities and the local health office reported that the holiday festival went on smoothly without any reported incidents.

Zamboanga banned the sale of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices, including pellet guns, as part of an effort to support the Department of Health’s campaign and advocacy against the use of all these dangerous and hazardous small explosive devices in welcoming the New Year.

Climaco earlier allayed fears of terror threats, saying the local government has been spending for the weekly fusion of intelligence resources in Zamboanga as part of aggressive measures of the government to protect the public.

She said the local government is also closely coordinating with the provincial governments of Basilan and Sulu and nearby provinces in a bid to avert all threats in Zamboanga. But Climaco called on the public to stay vigilant and support the police and military authorities by reporting suspicious people in their communities.

Police said the Abu Sayyaf may be targeting malls and other public areas in Zamboanga. (Mindanao Examiner)
