DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Feb. 24, 2012) – The Davao City Chapter of the Pi Sigma-Pi Sigma Delta Confraternity celebrated its 31st founding anniversary with the launching of the ‘art for the environment’ competition to enjoin the youth and students to become involved and paint a picture of the country’s social realities.
It said the “PINTIBAK” or Pinta ng Iskolar ng Bayan para sa Kalikasan, was geared towards bringing social, political and economic awareness to the people, especially the youth. In light with the recent natural disasters in the country, this year’s theme was “Sigaw ng Kabataan: Hustisya para sa Kalikasan.”
“It is high time for the youth to voice out their concerns and insights about the pressing issues in our society. One way of engaging the youth to become socially inclined is through arts and culture. Through this, we can actively participate in social issues – something that we can openly and ideologically appreciate,” Isiah Thomas Catarman, Lord Excelcius of the confraternity’s UP Mindanao chapter, said in a statement sent to the Mindanao Examiner.
Onofre Galvez, one of Pi Sigma Fraternity’s national founders, also extended a warm message to the participants. “With your skills in painting, let us paint the earth green, and let us labor together that, through the gifts you were given, you can voice your concern to the world that our earth needs the attention of all races so it can live to nurture more generations to come,” he said.
Those who judged the event were Bong Perez, Jun Cayas and Ega Carreon.

Qric John Batilaran, of the University of Mindanao, bested all other artists with his piece entitled “Syagit.” Paolo Cortes and Glea Czarina Geyrozaga were named first and second runners up, respectively. Jovany Manlupig was awarded with the Paragon’s choice. The winners received cash and plaques.
