COTABATO CITY – Philippine authorities have recovered a powerful bomb, foiling what could be another deadly attack on Tuesday in the restive region of Mindanao where security forces are fighting separatist rebels, officials said.
Officials said the discovery of the bomb, assembled from a 105mm howitzer cannon in North Cotabato’s Pigcawayan town, came a day after an improvised explosive went off at a market place in the neighboring town of Kabacan.
Soldiers and policemen were tracking down a man who left the bomb near a police post in the village of South Manuangan. The man fled on a motorcycle, witnesses told police.
Officials said the bomb was eventually disarmed by police bomb experts.
On Monday, civilians were evacuated from a market in Kabacan town minutes before a homemade bomb exploded in one of the stalls there.
The bomb was discovered by civilians who informed policemen and soldiers about it and giving them just enough time to evacuate people. The bomb exploded even before soldiers could disarm the explosive.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the bombing, but the province has been under rebel attack the past weeks with explosives detonating in different towns and had already toppled two power pylons, cutting of electricity in North Cotabato.
Military and police have blamed jihadists from the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement who are fighting for Muslim independence in the troubled region. (Mindanao Examiner)
