COTABATO CITY – Security forces recovered an improvised explosive and fragmentation grenade outside a government hospital in Cotabato City in southern Philippines, police said Friday.
It said a civilian discovered the explosive near the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center and informed authorities about it.
Members of the local police bomb squad disarmed the explosive which was assembled from a 60mm mortar. The grenade was recovered not far from where the bomb was found.
Police said the bomb and grenade were probably abandoned in the area due to the presence of soldiers and lawmen manning a checkpoint nearby.
Security forces were battling Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in nearby Maguindanao province, but it was unclear if the explosive was owned by the rebel group. (Mark Navales)
