SULU – Philippine authorities launched a massive manhunt for about a dozen prisoners who escaped from a police jail in the town of Jolo in the southern province of Sulu.
Police said 29 prisoners bolted from jail, but over a dozen of them had been recaptured on Saturday. The prisoners, mostly facing drug charges, escaped after a police guard left his post. It was unclear how the prisoners managed to escape from the jail inside the police headquarters located at the municipal government compound.
Other policemen mounted a massive search following the jailbreak and recovered 17 prisoners around the town. Police said an investigation is underway while the hunt continues for those who are still at large.
There was no immediate statement from the provincial police commander or the town mayor on the daring escape of the prisoners. (Mindanao Examiner)
