ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / May 8, 2013) – Suspected Abu Sayyaf rebels killed a Muslim soldier and wounded another in an attack in the southern Philippine town of Jolo, officials said on Wednesday.

Officials said the soldiers were travelling on a motorcycle when the rebels attacked them in the village of Kasanyangan near downtown Jolo. The ambushers escaped the shooting.

“They were shot by two Abu Sayyaf terrorists who escaped after the attack,” said Army Col. Rodrigo Gregorio, a spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command.

He said the slain soldier was identified as Corporal Timhar Abdukasim, but Gregorio did not disclose the identity of the wounded infantryman who was shot in the chest during the attack.

“The Abu Sayyaf will do anything to terrorize the people, both innocent civilians and soldiers as well. Their latest victims were fellow Muslims and who just came from relatives and they were not spared from becoming targets of atrocities,” he said.

The military has blamed the Abu Sayyaf for the spate of terrorism and kidnappings in the southern Philippines. (Mindanao Examiner)
