SULU – Thousands of people celebrated the 111thfounding anniversary of the island municipality of Siasi in the southern Philippine province of Sulu.
The celebration also highlighted the accomplishments of the local government in peace and development efforts. Municipal officials also invited Sulu Vice Governor Sakur Tan and Hajja Nurunisah Tan, head of the Sulu Provincial Women’s Council, as guests of honor in the celebration held recently.
Other municipal mayors and members of the Provincial Board and Sulu government officials also accompanied the vice governor. Medical volunteers and Dr. Farah Omar, head of the Integrated Provincial Health Office, also joined the entourage.
Sulu Governor Totoh Tan, who was not able to join the celebration due to his hectic schedule and important appointments, also sent his felicitation and his message read by his deputy before a huge crowd in the town’s center.
“In the same vein, I share the essence of their theme for this year’s celebrations of – Excellence in Governance: Key to Peace and Prosperity – which should be the foundation from which to jump-off the development missions which we, in the government, should pursue with vigor and sense of purpose.”
“Sulu is a province within the embrace of the sea with island municipalities and islets. Let unity, brotherhood and our common goals string us together like shining pearls of the deep never losing their values through the passage of time,” the governor said in his message.
For the part of the vice governor, he said the local government of Siasi and its people should continue to draw inspiration from its long history as it treads on the path of development and peace as encapsulated in its theme “Excellence in Governance: Key to Peace and Prosperity.”
“As Tausug, we have more reasons to strive for excellence in all fields of endeavor and break the shackles that seem to arrest our march towards a brighter horizon. True peace and meaningful development are preconditioned on our cohesiveness as a people and on our resolve to effect the changes that we seek for Sulu,” he said.
Hajja Tan also praised the efforts of the local officials headed by Mayor Mussah Muksan, Vice Mayor Abdel Anni and Siasi Municipal Administrator and former mayor Arthur Muksan and said she appreciates the efforts not only of the government officials and members of the municipal council and village officials, but also the people because of their unified efforts in keeping Siasi peaceful and progressive.
Most of her speech was in the local dialect, but she urged the women to empower themselves and vowed to help them succeed.
Hajja Tan and Dr. Omar also led various humanitarian programs in Siasi. (Franzie Sali)
