DAVAO CITY – Filipino troops clashed with communist rebels in the restive region of Mindanao where security forces are battling insurgents and terrorism.
An army spokesman, Capt. Alberto Caber, said the fighting erupted in Del Monte village in Agusan del Sur’s Veruela town. Although no soldiers or rebels were killed in the clash, he said troops recovered four automatic rifles left behind by fleeing gunmen, who were members of the New People’s Army.
He said soldiers from the 26th Infantry Battalion were still pursuing the rebels. “Pursuit operations are still on-going as of this reporting,” said Caber.
Caber said since January this year, the military already recovered 77 mostly powerful rebel weapons in clashes in eastern Mindanao.
There was no immediate statement from the NPA, which has been fighting for many decades now for the establishment of an independent Maoist state. (Mindanao Examiner)
